Learn How to Reset a Check Engine Light

Check Engine Light

No one wants to see their check engine light come on, but you don’t need to assume that you’re in need of expensive repairs. Although it’s never a bad idea to schedule service and let an expert take a look, DIY enthusiasts and amateurs alike may be able to solve the problem at home. Whether you think the light may have come on in error, or you’ve managed to fix the issue in your garage, learning how to reset a check engine light in your Toyota Corolla interior can help you remove that pesky service reminder in short order.

If There Is a Problem, Have It Resolved

In some cases, turning off your check engine light may be as simple as taking off and retightening your gas cap. If your check engine light comes on unexpectedly, start there. If it doesn’t go off right away, and you don’t have a scanner that you can use to identify the deeper issue at home, you should schedule service and fix the problem as soon as possible. However, even if you’ve managed to take care of the deeper issue at home, your check engine light may not go off automatically. There’s no need to make a trip to our service center–it’s easy to learn how to reset a check engine light at home!

Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

If you don’t have any specialized equipment on hand, the easiest way to reset a check engine light is to disconnect the negative battery cable and leave it unhooked for a minute or two. This will allow your systems to reset, and your check engine light should go off as soon you start to drive through Guaynabo or Rio Piedras. Here’s how to reset your check engine light by hand:

  1. Put on safety glasses and gloves, and turn off your ignition.
  2. Get under the hood and locate your car battery. The negative terminal will usually be marked by a black cap and/or a negative (-) symbol.
  3. Use a wrench to loosen the nut which secures the cable to the terminal. Remove the connector, and hold it to the side for 60 seconds or more.
  4. Reconnect the cable using your wrench.

It’s also possible to use a Toyota scanner to reset a check engine light. If you’d like to pick one up and find out how it works, get in touch with our parts department today.
